All About Bonanza Ads Pay Per Click Advertising

According to Bonanza's help page about the new PPC advertising, here's what sellers can expect:

  • Real-Time Performance Monitoring: Track your ad performance with live metrics
  • Pay Only for Clicks: You pay only when a shopper clicks on your ad.
  • Maximum Visibility: Your ads will appear on Bonanza's Home Page, Search Results, and Post-Sale Confirmation pages, getting prime placement in front of millions.

But here's where it gets tricky - sellers are required to prefund their ad spend with a non-refundable minimum $15 top up amount.

Adding Funds to Your Pay Per Click Budget
To begin your PPC journey, you’ll need to add funds to your budget. $15.00 is the minimum amount to start with.

Click the Add Funds button, enter the amount you wish to add, select your preferred payment method, and complete the process by clicking Complete Purchase.

The non-refundable amount will be charged to the credit card on file in your selling account.

Sellers who remember last year's controversial shipping program change, and the shenanigans that ensued, may understandably have a difficult time trusting Bonanza enough to be willing to keep non-refundable money on account to fund PPC ads.

Bonanza Sellers Hit With Unexpected Shipping Fees, Unannounced Change To Shipping Policy Help Page
Bonanza sellers hit with unexpected fees for labels via API shipping partners - is it a tech issue or has Bonanza reneged on exemption policy?

So far there is only one comment (a positive one) shown on the announcement blog post and apparently no discussion about the new feature on the Bonanza community page - though it's unclear if that reflects a lack of seller interest in PPC ads or if comments are being heavily moderated or withheld from publication as happened during the shipping program changes and subsequent fallout earlier this year.

Browsing the site, it's also difficult to determine if anyone is actually using the new ads yet.

The homepage has modules with suggested items they think I might like, but none of them are clearly marked anywhere as being paid ads.

Similarly, the search results page has a banner module that looks like it could possibly be an ad, as well as some listings with a banner that says "Featured" but it's impossible for a consumer to tell just from looking whether any of these are paid ads.

If those items are using this new Bonanza PPC advertising option, that's the kind of thing that could get the platform in big trouble with the FTC very quickly.

If you've ever wondered why Amazon, eBay and other marketplaces often place a "sponsored" label on some search results...it's not just because they all independently care so much about transparency in the consumer experience.

Bonanza will need to make sure they are carefully following legal and regulatory guidelines on both the buyer and seller side to avoid getting themselves in hot water.
