Buyers and sellers are scrambling this morning after automatic updates have left both the iOS and Android versions of the eBay app non-functional and unable to be updated on older devices.

eBay's community forums for the US and UK have been flooded with complaints, indicating this is an issue for anyone with older devices which do not support the most recent versions of their respective operating systems, leaving them incompatible with the latest eBay app update.

But most of the posts in the US forum about the issue so far have been from users registered in the UK, so it's not exactly clear at this point if this is a UK only issue or impacted users in other locations as well.

If it is UK only, could it be related to the launch of Buyer Fees in the UK today? That would certainly be the kind of disruption eBay had hoped to avoid by changing to a phased roll out.

eBay UK is making a last minute change to introduction of Buyer Fees, opting for a phased rollout to “minimise potential disruptions”.

The new policy which holds UK private seller payouts until after delivery goes into effect today as well, which may have also required changes to the eBay app forcing an update there.

eBay UK Private Seller Funds To Be Held Until Delivery As Fee & Payments Changes Continue
eBay UK just dropped the other shoe on private sellers, revealing the cost of fee-free selling will be longer wait times to get paid.

For Android, it appears devices will now need to have Android OS 10 0r above to ran the eBay app, according to eBay UK community staff.

It was advised yesterday that the latest eBay app version is no longer compatible with android 9 and below. It actually requires OS android 10 and above.

There is a ticket opened with tech as we have alot of users reporting the issue yesterday and today. If you can let me know your device type and current android version/ios version I can add this information to the ticket.

And while I haven't seen any official comments from eBay staff about iPhones and iPads, user comments say they are receiving an error when trying to use the app indicating they need to update to iOS 17 - but again, their older devices are not able to do so, so the eBay app does not work.

Can’t download iOS 17
Can’t download iOS 17 on my old iPhone now I have been lock out on my account, I already post something to sell on eBay but now can’t get into my account? What can I do now ?? Please help!

For security and other reasons, eBay does not make older versions of their app available after an update, so unfortunately there is no way to go back to the previous version that worked with older operating systems once an update as occurred.

Users with old devices that do not support the most recent operating system versions will instead need to use eBay through either the desktop experience on a regular computer or through a mobile browser instead of the app if they wish to continue using their older phones or tablets.

eBay UK community staff have confirmed this is not a technical issue and that users who are experiencing the problem will either need to update their operating system or use the mobile or desktop web experience instead.

Re: Pictures missing using APP
Hi All, Tech have confirmed the latest report of the app not working is not a technical issue. Sometimes, to ensure that you are using the latest version of eBay, we require you to update your app version. Please uninstall and reinstall your app, and then log back into eBay as normal. That should…

Please uninstall and reinstall your app, and then log back into eBay as normal. That should rectify the situation.

If this does not work, you may need to upgrade your OS version and then reinstall the eBay app. In the meantime, you can also access ebay.co.uk via your desktop or mobile web browser.

Have you been impacted by this eBay app update? If so, are you in the UK, US or somewhere else? Let us know in the comments below!
