eBay has a new Chief Analytics Officer as Jateen Patel joins the company, bringing expertise in data, analytics, and AI from his time as Chief Data and Analytics Officer at food retail group, Ahold Delhaize.

The new addition was announced on LinkedIn by Chief Growth Officer Julie Loeger, who extolled Patel's commitment to DE&I and sponsorship of corporate inclusion initiatives.

Prior to Ahold Delhaize, Patel held Analytics and Customer Intelligence roles at SymphonyAI, Centrica, dunnhumby and more.

He replaces previous VP Global Analytics, Jim Oliver, who left eBay in April after 3 years at the company.

Patel's role may also consolidate some aspects of the Global Insights Manager position that was recently eliminated, leaving Lamont Jones suddenly looking for a new job due to "a shift in company priorities."

eBay Bids Farewell To Global Insights Manager Lamont Jones Amidst Shifting Corporate Priorities
eBay Global Insights Manager, Lamont Jones is “open to work” as his role had been eliminated due to shifting priorities at the company.

That shift began earlier this year with mass layoffs and the departure of Chief Business Strategy Officer, Stefanie Jay and has continued with several key business development departures in recent months,

Since that time, the company has been expanding their "high value buyer focus vertical" strategy to include more of the core consumer to consumer (C2C) sales that have historically been the foundation of eBay's success.

Those C2C efforts have ramped up quickly in the UK as part of what eBay calls the "fix the fundamental aspect of UK Win back plan"dropping private selling fees across most categories and expecting to bring in buyer fees and managed shipping in early 2025 to "remonetize" that market.

eBay UK To Introduce Buyer Fee In 2025 As Private Selling Goes Fee-Free
eBay 8-K announces fee-free private selling for most categories in the UK, quietly drops big bombshell with buyer fees planned for early 2025!

C2C initiatives were a main topic of interest in yesterday's Q3 2024 earnings call, with weak Q4 guidance raising questions about pressure from fee-free selling lowering revenue estimates during the all important holiday shopping season.

eBay Q3 2024 Earnings - Weak Q4 Revenue Guidance Raises Questions About Fee-Free Selling, C2C Strategy
eBay releases Q3 2024 results, with weak Q4 revenue guidance raising questions about fee-free selling and consumer to consumer strategy pivot.

No doubt much of Patel's work on analytics and AI will center around eBay's increasingly automated and AI-powered customer experience that Loerger and VP Global Customer Experience Derek Allgood have been promoting on podcasts and social media.

eBay’s “Phenomenal” Customer Experience: Who Are They Trying To Convince?
eBay VP Derek Allgood interview spills secret to “phenomenal” customer experience, raising questions about AI, automation & employee morale.

But if he really wants to start things off with a challenge, I'd suggest Patel should get with Chief Technology Officer Mazen Rawashdeh to fix the embarrassing not ready for prime time launch of traffic analytics for sellers in the eBay mobile app.

DEI hiring is a disgustingly racist and discriminatory hiring process, it should be illegal, eBay should be ashamed of itself hiring people based on DEI standards rather than on merit and experience.

I remember when you could just call the seller and chat. Send a check etc. It's only going to get worse - if that's possible.

I only send offers to Watchers, not Views, and only if i have wiggle room in the price. I wish there was a way to clear the list of those i will not send. Instead, they remain in my Tasks. There could be a "Do not remind me again" box, like in Item Specifics.

Idk if this’ll help anyone else, but I’ve just come up with a fix for my issue using Brave as a web browser.

My issue is that more & more listings I come across no longer seem to have a description available ~anywhere~ on their desktop web page and it’s been driving me CRAZY!! I just now thought to try toggling off Brave’s "Shields" function button, and BAM. Descriptions are back, baby. 😎

Do I feel a wee bit stupid? …Maybe. (Should’ve thought to try that sooner. Hindsight, blahblahbl—) HOWEVER! Should I have to turn off my lovely web browser’s security/privacy features just to peruse eBay listings? Absolutely not.

(Glad to find this article, even if it wasn’t 100% tied to what my latest issue was. Something has definitely been afoot within eBay, that’s for sure. 🤔)
