eBay is randomly lifting selling limits for a large swath of sellers with little explanation, but that doesn't mean insertion fees won't still apply!

Sellers report receiving an email that says:

You can now list more on eBay. We're excited to let you know that we've removed the selling limit on your account. This means you can list all the items you need to further grow your business on eBay.

Many sellers were perplexed as their selling limits were already higher than they could conceivably use and they had not requested an increase any time recently.

eBay Gave Me Unlimited Seller’s Limit
I have not asked for a limit increase in 18 moths and yesterday out of nowhere eBay raised my limit to 1 Billion Listing limit for both items and dollar amount. I have not asked for a limit increase in 18 months and yesterday out of nowhere eBay raised my limit to 1 Billion Listing limit for both items and dollar amount. Today I got another email from eBay and I now have unlimited listing abilities. Anyone know what's up with that? Asking because I like to understand the "why" of things.

It appears to be a global change, as some sellers in the UK also report receiving a similar message.

Un-prompted eBay have completely removed all selling limits from my 2nd account. Wierd!
My 2nd account had a limit of £100k and 30k items up until today. More than enough for the items I list there. My main account is old enough that it was grandfathered in to not having selling limits ever. But all of a sudden, without me asking I see in 2nd acc limits panel that I can “List as many i…

My 2nd account had a limit of £100k and 30k items up until today. More than enough for the items I list there. My main account is old enough that it was grandfathered in to not having selling limits ever. But all of a sudden, without me asking I see in 2nd acc limits panel that I can "List as many items as I like" there.

Curious if this is a broader trend or just happened to me?

The email goes on to make it clear that insertion fees will still be charged if you go over your monthly free listing allowance, depending on your store subscription level (if any) and that Service Metrics and Seller Standards policies also still apply.

What you should know:
There are no changes to your fees. Even though your selling limit has been removed, there have been no changes to your fees, and insertion fees will be applied accordingly.

Other Policies To Keep In Mind
Please not that exisiting policies such as seller standards and service metrics will continue to be used to monitor seller performance.

The selling limit adjustments are being made in phases, with eBay closely monitoring the impact the changes may have and reserving the right to make further changes without notice.

While the increase seems spread across a variety of sellers, it could potentially be part of an increasing pivot back to broader consumer-seller or small business focus and away from the limited "high value enthusiast buyer focus" strategy eBay has pursued the last few years.

As questions linger about eBay's future business strategy, new job positions and comments from CEO Jamie Iannone on the Q4 earnings call and recent Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference show eBay is "leaning in" to C2C success in Germany and testing expanding fee free selling for private sellers in the UK.

eBay Job Listings Hint At Strategic Pivot & Fresh Consumer-Seller Focus
Amidst layoffs & potential leadership shakeup, job listings show eBay seeking new strategies with possible pivot back to consumer-seller focus.

Jamie and CFO Steve Priest have been carefully threading the needle to try to paint the picture that they are simply continuing with their enthusiast strategy that has been working all along, but the importance of reintroducing C2C to the conversation should not be undervalued.

eBay has told Wall Street they are expecting to return to GMV growth in Q3 or Q4 2024 and long overdue return to broader consumer-seller roots while boosting sales by removing limits and offering fee or advertising discounts to certain groups of sellers could be the key to accomplishing that goal.
