eBay is finally starting to roll out the "take a picture and let AI do the rest" Magical Listing tool after year and a half delay starting in Germany, plus April 2025 Seller Update reveals new details about Facebook Marketplace integration.

Back in September 2023, CEO Jamie Iannone wowed investors with a mock up demo of a Magical Listing tool he claimed would allow sellers to just take a picture and let AI do the rest and sellers have been wondering when this exciting new tool will actually be released ever since.

eBay teases magical AI listing tool to create listings using only an image - will it live up to the hype?

Now it appears eBay is finally ready to start the slow rollout of this new tool in the mobile app, starting in Germany (translated by Google).

Now available in Germany: The new AI tool for easy sales
Dr. Saskia Meier-Andrae, Managing Director of eBay Germany, sees the pre-loved market – the trade in used, refurbished, and reconditioned items – not only as an opportunity to boost household budgets, but also as a key growth market:

"We recognized the potential of the pre-loved market early on, which is why private sales on eBay.de have been free for two years now. We were the first eBay market to introduce this service, and it's been widely used. With the new AI feature, we're now taking a decisive step further," says Dr. Saskia Meier-Andrae.

"Our goal is to consistently remove barriers and make selling as easy as possible. Because we know that the effort involved in listing items holds many back. Our new AI tool simplifies precisely this process and ensures fast, high-quality listings with minimal effort."

The tool automates much of the listing process: Instead of a text-based search, a photo is enough. Using image recognition and data-based analysis, the AI automatically identifies relevant product details, suggests appropriate categories, and adds important information.

It will be interesting to see how well eBay's solution for single item AI-assisted listing works compared to the bulk listing tool they introduced last year, with mixed results.

eBay is expanding AI “Magical Bulk Listing” to include more categories, but demo shows the tool has limitations, still requires manual inputs.

Unfortunately, that year and a half delay puts eBay well behind smaller competitors who have launched their own AI-enabled listing tools including Mercari, Depop and Poshmark - will eBay's tool stack up against the competition or will sellers be harder to impress now that it is a standard tool on other marketplaces?

eBay Germany also put out a seller update for April 2025 today which includes more information about eBay's integration with Facebook Marketplace as well as energy efficiency labeling requirements for smartphones, tablets and tumble dryers and new import requirements for Mexico.

eBay announced the Meta partnership in January, but sellers have been struggling to find any of their listings on Facebook Marketplace as Meta announced they were expanding to include more competing marketplaces.

Now eBay Germany says they are working on adding more eBay listings to Facebook in the region.

Facebook Marketplace | Verkäuferportal

We recently announced our collaboration with Facebook Marketplace . We're currently working on increasing the number of eBay listings displayed there.

What's in it for you? Your eBay listings can be featured on Facebook Marketplace based on various factors such as interests, trends, and the quality of your listings. This is at no additional cost and requires no additional action on your part.

How it works
Recently, suitable eBay listings can now appear in the Facebook Marketplace feed. On Facebook Marketplace, these listings appear:

  • with an icon,
  • with the respective price, the offer details and your pre-selected shipping options on eBay.

Please note : Facebook Marketplace currently only displays eBay listings for shipping. Local pickup listings are not currently supported.

To purchase eBay listings through Facebook Marketplace, buyers automatically use eBay Checkout.

For you as a business seller, this means: Transactions for eBay sales through Facebook Marketplace proceed exactly as you're used to on our marketplace. You benefit from all our protection measures when your eBay listings sell through Facebook Marketplace.

When the program was first announced, eBay said sellers would not have any control over whether or not their listings were include but it appears they have now added an option to opt out - likely forced by EU regulatory requirements.

Can I refuse to have my eBay listings featured on Facebook Marketplace?
There are benefits to listing your items on Facebook Marketplace: You can reach more people outside of eBay, increasing the visibility of your listings and your sales opportunities. This comes at no additional cost.

Of course, you also have the option to decline this. Learn more about this on our help page under Declining Cross-Listing

If you are an eBay Seller in Germany, I'd love to hear about your experiences with Magical AI Listing or eBay's Facebook Marketplace integration - leave a comment below or contact VAR!

I am in Canada. 90% of my goods are made in China. And then to have the other 10% tariffed will kill my business. 90% of my sales are to the US. Buyers will not be willing to pay an extra 54% as in the case with China goods. And I am not selling items from Temu and Shein. I am mostly selling vintage toys. I will have to move all of my items to sell only in Canada and lose all my US customers. I started reselling about 5 years ago and this was supposed to continue into my retirement. Goods that are retired can not be manufactured again. There is no plant that can be opened to make something that was built in the early 2000s. I would be shocked if Mattel would move their plant to the US.

So, ebay is doing an "intentional test" AT THE BUYER'S EXPENSE, with no indication this is happening until a bid is made. Seems like fraudulent behavior to me. What's the recourse for buyers?
