eBay UK Drops Cash On Collection Amid Local Shopping Shake Up
eBay UK will no longer allow cash payment on collection starting October 1st as part of larger Local shopping experience overhaul.
The announcement was posted in the UK community today, promising users a "safer and better experience" with other existing payment options.
To make paying for eBay purchases with collection in person a safer and better experience, the ability to pay with cash on pickup will no longer be available from 1 October 2024 in most item categories. Buyers that choose collection in person will still be able to use other existing payment options to complete their payments on eBay.
When creating a new listing and offering the option for buyers to collect their item in person, you’ll no longer be able to select “cash on pickup” as a payment method.
The “cash on pickup” option will still remain on some active listings for the next few weeks. It will also continue to be available in a limited number of categories, such as cars, motorcycles, and vehicles.
Please note that the timelines for payment processing will remain unchanged and, in most cases, payment will be released to you once the buyer has confirmed the collection of the item. You can find out more about payment processing on our Seller Centre page.
We’re committed to making eBay a safe, local shopping platform and we’d encourage you to continue to select local pickup as a delivery option in your listings. Selecting this option will help give greater visibility to your items when buyers are searching in their local area.
The move comes as eBay is overhauling the Local experience for the UK with a new Local hub on the site to help buyers find deals in their area.
The decision to end cash on collection for local pick up in the UK comes as no surprise as eBay is following the same playbook they deployed in the German market last year.
UK users discussed the removal of cash on pick up, along with changes to reduce the number of free listings for private sellers, expressing concerns about how the new process will accommodate buyers who do not have smart phones to use QR codes to confirm pick up.
Just saw the new seller rules. I've got no issue with the reduction in free listings. But no more cash on collection I do mind. It means there is no way to make a buyer check on collection and once they accept it pay with no risk of them changing their mind later.
And will buyers be happy being forced to pay up front before they see an item?
