eBay UK is putting fee-free private selling front and center for the holidays with an immersive display in the heart of London that lets people shop pre-loved items across luxury, fashion, home, tech, and toys, from sellers across the UK.

eBay Brings the Nation’s Listings to London’s Busiest High Street
Just in time for Christmas, eBay’s “Listings in Lights” delivers an immersive holiday shopping experience, making it easier than ever to shop pre-loved presents.

Taking place at Outernet at Tottenham Court Road on the 8th and 9th of November, the experience will bring pre-loved inventory from sellers across the UK together, in a live shoppable light installation.

Guests at the Outernet, inspired by the festive gifting suggestions, will be able to scan QR codes to shop products on eBay. To be in with the chance to have their products included, all sellers need to do is include the hashtag #ListingsInLights in the title of their listing to see their items in lights on one of London’s busiest high streets.

How it works:

Private UK sellers were invited to list items from November 2-6 with the hashtag #ListingsInLights in the title to have the chance at being featured in this event, plus a chance at winning one of 25 £200 eBay vouchers.

The result is an impressive display of a variety of pre-loved items you can find on eBay, with all the glitz and glitter of the season thrown in.

Interestingly, it looks like the actual display does not show the hashtag in the title, while it is shown when you view those items on the regular site.

While the hashtag is a clever idea, and makes it easy for eBay to identify listings from sellers who want to be featured, looking at the top results in "best match" sorting on the site doesn't provide quite the same impressive user experience.

US based sellers have been critical of eBay's lack of holiday marketing in recent years, with efforts and dollars targeted exclusively on "high value focus verticals" like sneakers, trading cards, luxury handbags, jewelry and watches, and refurbished tech and electronics.

Will eBay Holiday Marketing Go Beyond Select Verticals?
eBay sellers wonder will holiday ads go beyond verticals - sneakers, luxury, trading cards, refurb & car parts?

The Listings In Lights display wins points for featuring a wider variety of sellers and is more compelling than some of the in person pop up shop events eBay has promoted in the past.

I'd love to see this concept expanded to the US, and while it may be shooting for the stars, how cool would it be to see the Sphere in Las Vegas turned into a giant Winter Wonderland snow globe full of magical listings you can find on eBay for the holidays?

What kind of holiday marketing campaigns would you like to see from eBay in the US and beyond? Let us know in the comments below!

I've had this happen a few times, and it confused me. One seller alleged that they had to use Amazon's services to make sure I got my item in time. I recently bought something simple, and the seller made a mistake. They'd sent me 3 different messages, one of them too early, telling me they hoped my item arrived in perfect condition. The next day, the item was marked as shipped, and I got an official Ebay shipping email. The seller was using direct messages to give me item updates. If I wanted Amazon, I'd have used them myself! lol

Happening to me too. On my active listings page (with the full list) it looks fine, but when I click on them, many have the random characters. I reported it, and that's when one glitch led to another! As I was typing the message after clicking the "?", letters were repeatedly not coming up (usually one or two at the end of a word). I was finally able to get the message entered, but how tedious!
