It's official - private eBay sellers in the UK will be required to use Simple Delivery managed shipping starting April 15, 2025. Here's what you need to know!

eBay UK Simple Delivery Mandate Goes Live In April 2025 - What Private Sellers Need To Know
It’s official - private eBay UK sellers will be required to use Simple Delivery managed shipping on eligible items starting April 15, 2025.

eBay UK sellers say eBay is making it increasingly difficult to opt out of Simple Delivery as mandated usage of the managed shipping option for private sellers is expected to go into full effect some time in Q2 2025.

Simple Delivery was introduced in the UK in May 2024, initially only available to private clothing sellers before expanding to cover more categories late last year.

With this managed delivery service, eBay decides which shipping options to show to the buyer on the listing, the buyer pays whatever rate is shown (with that money going to eBay), eBay then provides a pre-paid label to the seller and eBay pockets any difference there may be between what the buyer pays and the rates they have negotiated with the shipping carriers.

eBay Simple Delivery Managed Shipping: What Private UK Sellers Need To Know For 2025 Mandate
eBay UK private sellers will be required to use Simple Delivery Managed Shipping in Q1 2025 - here’s what we know so far about the program!

CEO Jamie Iannone had previously said Simple Delivery would be mandated to be used for all "eligible items" sold by private sellers in the UK in Q1 2025, but pushed that mandate back to Q2 during the most recent earnings call after introducing updates to the program including the option to set carrier preferences, use Royal Mail collection, and offer seller-paid "free" shipping to buyers.

eBay has taken a gradual path to eventually making Simple Delivery mandatory, first by changing the listing form to make Simple Delivery the default setting rather than Custom Postage.

Now, according to some sellers in the eBay UK community forum, they've gone a step further and hidden the Custom Postage option behind a "click wall" requiring users to click Advanced Options link in order to opt out of Simple Delivery.

OK. Simple delivery will override your domestic postage policy. It's here

Just tried to list an item. Can't put free postage option. It's simple delivery or nothing. They're just making this even more complicated now.

Some sellers shared some possible workarounds, like using Sell Similar on an old listing with Custom Postage or switching the option to Collection only and then back to postage only, in order to override the apparent forced Simple Delivery.

I found this worked for me , I'm using a laptop and Chrome, no idea if it works on apps or mobile browser.

If confronted with a current compulsory Simple Delivery, no other option, in the Postage section click on Collection, then go back and click on Postage Only, custom option then appears and you cans elect the service and charge you wish to use.

Others say they are still able to access the Custom Postage option - but it's hidden where you have to click on an easy to miss link that says "Switch to advanced options."

While that option does appear to work for now, these workarounds will likely be short lived since eBay has made it very clear the eventual goal is to mandate Simple Delivery usage for all eligible items sold by private sellers in the UK.

What do you think about eBay's plans to make Simple Delivery mandatory for private, consumer to consumer sellers? Let us know in the comments below!

No advanced options available. I sell plants that are obviously alive and i only use royal mail 24 hrs . Now i have no control. I have spent hours trying to opt out of simple delivery but got nowhere. Very unhappy seller after 20 odd years!

Oh my goodness, simple delivery is not simple. So far I’ve juggled with my postage by listing an item with the old eBay on line system and not via the app, this has worked so far. Never-the-less eBay are charging my customers extortionate prices or silly low prices for P&P when I use their app. I never send my items in a padded envelope or and enormous box but eBay think they know how to wrap and calculate the weight of the things I sell, I’M NIT A CHILD and don’t need this awful system. I’ve noticed a lot of the people on my watch list have recently given up 🤔 I wonder if this is due to ebays disregard for its customers? . EBAY, SIMPLE DELIVERY IS SIMPLY AWFUL!!!

Absolutely agree with other people here - this Ebay "simple postage" is a wheeze to squeeze more out of private sellers. I live walking distance to the post office (2 minute walk) and it's 4 miles to my local Evri drop off point. I don't have a car. So will have to opt for Royal Mail only - which in turn adds an extra few pence to the postage. Previously a 2nd mail parcel was £3.25, with this it's going to be an increase of nearly 50%. The biggest increase is for the 1-2kg parcels, which previously qualified as small parcels.

As many of the items I sell are £10 or less, this makes it not worth the bother and I'll probably have to give it away to the charity shop.

Add that to the "buyer protection" fee they've added on - and the costs are making it untenable for people trying to clear the house, or make a few bob from old bits and pieces. Not happy at all and there doesn't seem to be a way of opting out.

The sooner these sleazebags at the top can be got rid of, or some community-run buy/sell/swap sites come up - the better. We don't need ebay.

Sadly the simple fact is that Ebay want to get rid of Private/Hobby sellers who were once the backbone of their operation. Amazon did something similar a few years ago. I've been an Ebay user/Private seller since 1999 and have dealt with a number of crackpot Ebay changes in the intervening years but this is where my Ebay journey ends.

This won’t work for many of my sales, as I sell on behalf of someone who lives 12 miles away who doesn’t have a computer or smart phone. When one of her items sells I let her know the address and she sends it from her local post office.
I can’t be the only one doing this, eBay have not thought this through. We will have to use a different platform for these sales unless eBay sees sense and provides an opt out.
Additionally I do not like being dictated to in this way. I’ve used eBay for 22 years and it’s worked fine, so why mess it up??

I don't need eBay to "insure" what I sell.
Since I'm really a private seller, meaning I sell very little (I'm not a store that sells privately to avoid taxes), I go to the post office two or three times a week with a few items and ask for Proof of Postage. If Royal Mail loses or breaks an item, I file a claim. So far, Royal Mail has paid every claim I've filed, previously with a bank check and, for some time now, with stamps. When they pay me with stamps, they send me roughly double the value of the loss in stamps. If I sold something for 5 or 6 pounds, they send me eight first-class letter stamps, about £12.80. I use those stamps for second-class large letters (£1.55). I add a note next to the stamp explaining that the stamp covers the value of second-class large letters. And I've never had any problems.
Now everything will be more expensive for the buyer, I'll have to leave eBay.
Can anyone advise me on where to sell online in the UK, and where it'll be effective? Another option is to sell my things as job lots, at very low prices to clear my stock.

With all these changes, I'll have to stop selling on eBay. I sell many inexpensive items, like keychains, which I used to sell for between £2.50 and £3 including shipping. Now I have to add over 80p for the new fees. Since the keychains are flat, I send them as second-class mail for 85p. I'm sure with the "simple" system, they'll charge buyers a first-class "large letter" service of £2.60 (Royal Mail) or maybe £2 in Evri or Yodel.
I'm sure "Simple" will raise shipping costs for buyers, effectively driving private sellers out of the market with noncompetitive prices. Another problem is that I live in a village and there's only a post office. I won't spend a drop of petrol shipping packages miles away because the buyer chooses another shipping company. And if the option is for the buyer to pay even more to have someone pick up what I sold from my house, it will be impossible to sell. And add to that, having to wait for someone who will come to pick up the package whenever they want. Or will I leave it lying outside the door? Because now the custom is for the delivery person to leave everything lying right outside your door. They don't even ring the bell anymore. And if you're lucky, it's your door and not someone's in another town.

I’ve sold on eBay for over ten years, but no more. I use stamps for postage, I can buy them at half face value and I don’t want the expense of printer costs.
If simple delivery is the only option then I shall no longer be using eBay. It’s a shame but eBay is obviously putting its profits (kick backs from their chosen couriers) before loyal users.

Why are you taking the postage from my account but not adding it back with sales money ie 10 quid item 5.88 postage 5.88 went from account but only 10 went back in 🤬so I am out of pocket x15 items

It seems that at every step eBay is destroying the pleasure of trying to sell for private sellers. Buyers fees, simple delivery and extended payments all ruin the experience but do they care. Not likely. Many like me are finally finished and unless eBay rescind their ridiculous policies then never to return

This is the end of eBay for me after 20 years. There is no way to charge a small amount for packaging - eBay, on their 'Simple Selling' hide anything else so if you want to pack your, possibly fragile, item securely you will have to foot the bill for this. Today I queried with eBay why my £3.75 postage, which my buyer paid, was reduced to £3.06 in the breakdown as being eBay's estimate of the postage cost on the date it was listed (!!) and then i got nothing - i had to post it through Evri - it didn't even let me see the buyer's address until the label was printed. The label position on the page is then set so you need to use an A4 label sheet for every two labels rather than 4. I had a long and tortuous 'debate' on the phone with an agent who eventually told me that Simple postage is now mandatory and they will be letting seller know 'next week'. I am absolutely furious.

This, on top of Buyer protection Fee, has made it impossible to sell competitively on eBay. My buyers don't need protection from me!! I have 100% feedback rating over 20 years - this is just another money-making scam from eBay. The price with the protection fee is not competitive for anything and i am not even getting views let alone watchers!! Identical listings where items sold for £10 plus £3.75 postage and packing 6 weeks ago, have necessitated me reducing to £2.75, few people, if any looking, and now a silly offer of 75p!!!!! - Then i lose out on the postage as eBay pocket the difference between what Royal Mail Charge and their estimate of Evri! Evri - which used to be Hermes and smashed an antique set of China worth over £100 a few years ago by leaving the box out in the rain until it was so sodden that it collapsed!! Well done eBay - no regard for your customers!

Simple Delivery will be the end of eBay. At first, I thought they were trying to get the postage costs down, but as there was no Royal Mail collection option: "I live in a rural area, and Evri and Yodel don't turn up, so I choose to use the old system"., Today, I found an item I sold had postage of £10 and the buyer had pre-paid. I couldn't understand why the postage was so high, I then discovered I forgot to opt out of Simple Delivery. The poor buyer paid eBay £10 pp. I spoke to the buyer and we agreed to cancel and relist the item using the old system. She paid £6.99 postage, and the item will be collected by Royal Mail.
I've been on eBay for 20 years, through the early bad times and the good, but if Simple Delivery becomes mandatory, I'm off.

Have experienced same as everyone else, but I don’t even have Advanced Options listed. A warning, 2 items I listed earlier, one came up free postage for the buyer, another postage to cost buyer £4.92 on a £5 item. Deleted both and presumably will have to find another way to sell books as a private seller.

It is Slowwwwwww and is more expensive to the buyer. In the past items I have ordered will sit at the hub for around 2 weeks. I avoid ebay unless I cannot get it elsewhere.

Hi, I have a friend who had an interesting experience recently that fell under this issue. They sold an item, packed and dispatched to the UK Ebay hub, this was midway through the period as the pause occurred. They then received a message from the buyer that they had checked tracking and discovered that the item had disappeared on ebay, no advice. It then turned out that the tracking had been fudged and the package was with them but not forwarded on to the USA. A few hours of to and fro to get the answer that it was due to the tariff dilemma. NO fault of the buyer(who had paid) or the seller ((who had been paid) and a strange response that the item could not be delivered. The buyer would be refunded in full, the seller would keep payment and the item would not be returned. Strange, Ebay must be hurting paying our both sides of the deal+

  1. Start building out the brand and promoting the heck out of Canadian sellers to our domestic market. Work with Federal/Provincial level governments in the push to build a strong presence here in Canada.

  2. Add other calculated shipping options than Canada Post UPS/FedEx for domestic shipping - partner with couriers nationwide, leverage agreements and software integrations with courier reseller platforms such as Stallion Express. Build out a crowd sourced network using national/regional retail locations as drop points for rural regions, leveraging transport networks to move packages to courier pickup points, akin to the UK courier model but adapted to the Canadian realities.

  3. Create a centralized international shipping clearing house to aide micro businesses with affordable shipping rates and customs clearance to avoid pitfalls and complexities (akin to US eIS).

  4. Bring features forward to the platform from other localizations, such as prepaid best offer acceptance, etc.
