Etsy Forcing Many Stores Into Vacation Mode, Stopping Crucial Holiday Sales

The Etsy community forum is being flooded with sellers whose stores have been forced into vacation mode with no warning or explanation, bringing a sudden stop to sales in crucial final days to meet holiday shipping deadlines.

Sellers report the sudden notifications about their stores being temporarily shut down contained very little information or confusing explanations saying Etsy was reviewing their documents to verify their identity or business details when the seller had not uploaded any new documents for them to review and their previous documents had already been verified.

Forced on Vacation Mode and No Info
Hi Etsy Support, My shop has been put in vacation mode without any warning, email, or message. My account is in good standing—I’m a best seller with no violations, no late shipments, or issues. My shop has been put in vacation mode without any warning, email, or message. My account is in good standing—I’m a best seller with no violations, no late shipments, or issues.

I’ve also uploaded all proof of ID and reviewed my legal and tax info months ago. It has all been verified already.

My shop is my full-time income. I'm a single Mom, and this is a huge financial loss for my family, especially during the Christmas season!

Re: Forced Vacation Mode Right Before Christmas - Anyone else?
Hello! We’re sorry to hear you’re experiencing issues with your account. We’ve forwarded your concerns to a specialist team. Thank you! Please know we handle support inquiries privately per our Community Policy – we’re closing this thread, so you can get the support you need from us directly.

My shop has been in forced vacation mode for over 4 days now, and I have no idea why. I’ve contacted Seller Support multiple times, but all I get are generic replies telling me to "check my email" or "wait for an email"—but there’s no email at all.

I have no overdue orders and didn’t upload any new documents. This is happening during the busiest time of the year, and it’s so frustrating to be left in the dark like this.

I’ve seen other sellers dealing with the same thing—it seems to be a global issue. Does anyone know what’s going on? How long does this really take?

Etsy, please give us answers! This is affecting our businesses and families, and we deserve some transparency.

To make matters worse, moderators in the Etsy community are quickly and actively closing and locking posts about this problem, directing sellers to contact support privately for help and preventing further public discussion.

As many other sellers have reported, my store was also shut down on Dec 14th and put into a forced vacation mode. After attempting to reach Etsy with no success or response, I turned to the forums here.

An Etsy mod closed my thread (which stops users from responding) stating that they would reach out to me. Etsy did indeed reach out to me and requested documents including my driver's license and a copy of my business registration which I promptly provided.

Finally, Etsy emailed me around 2am this morning letting me know that my identity has been verified and I can start receiving payments again. Problem is though, my store is still in VACATION mode... Under business verification documents it states that there is "Action required" but it gives me no information on what else I need to do or provide.

I have given Etsy everything they have requested, I can clearly see the documentation that I already uploaded in my Legal / Tax Information tab, everything matches as it should. I have no problems with any other platform I sell on or payment processing accounts (Stripe, PayPal, etc)...

Please also keep in mind, I've been selling on Etsy for years now. My name has not changed, my bank account, EIN, my driver's license, everything is the same. Everything I've provided Etsy with is information they already had.

I don't know what happened here, if this was some kind of massive hack or attack, but I am just thankful that many of my loyal customers were able to find me on alternative platforms. If I was relying solely on Etsy as my only source of income, this would've absolutely devasted my family financially right before Christmas.

Etsy, PLEASE, get this issue resolved. I have been a loyal seller (and shareholder) for years, but something is very much broken on Etsy's end and needs to be fixed....

And not only does being put in forced vacation mode stop new orders coming in, it also freezes payouts for recently completed orders too, causing even more of a cash flow crunch for affected sellers.

Forced Vacation Mode - Reposting in Technical Issues
As suggested by someone, am reposting in Technical Issues in the hope someone can please help us. Our store has been put on Vacation mode late last week but there was no notification/email about it. The dashboard home says:

"Your shop will stay in Vacation Mode while we review your info. This means you won't be able to receive new orders until we finish verifying your info (which usually takes up to 48 hours after you uploaded your document). No need to do anything else right now—we'll reach out if we need more details from you."

Payouts of the outstanding balance is also frozen.

We didn't receive any requests for ID documents recently and our credit card and ID's etc are also all up to date. We also raised a case with Etsy support but haven't heard back yet.

Meanwhile, in the few threads that have not yet been locked to replies, sellers are sharing suggestions or workarounds that worked for them - but of course, there's no guarantee these suggestions will solve the issue for others.

Re: Help- ‘Your shop will stay in Vacation Mode while we review your info’
Thank you so much for replying! It honestly is scary, especially as I reply on this as my full time business. It’s definitely made me consider having my own website now. However I’ve actually just manage to resolve this, hopefully it won’t come back! My partner found someone talking about this happe…

My partner found someone talking about this happening to them on a reddit sub and they recommended removing any expired credit or debit cards on your account (even if they aren't saved as you default card). I did this and 2 minutes later the vacation mode was removed from my shop.

Everyone saying there's nothing to do is wrong. This happened to a bunch of us in another thread. most of us got back up and running after a few days.

1st: Open a ticket saying that you were put on vacation mode without communication and that you want to know what to do next. some people opened up multiple tickets. I opened 4, and emailed the ceo directly.

It appears that there is some technical issue. it will most likely be resolved within a few days, and your shop will suddenly be back up without any explanation as if nothing happened. Best of luck though. I hope it gets resolved faster than mine.

With many new legal and regulatory mandates coming into effect like GPSR in Europe and Beneficial Ownership reporting in the US, not to mention tax updates that may impact sellers in different locations, it's understandable that Etsy may be in a position to need to collect and review additional documentation from many sellers before the end of the year.

However, it is absolutely not understandable and not acceptable for Etsy to bungle their compliance responsibilities while putting accounts on hold and causing serious harm to the small business sellers on their site in the process.

The lack of transparency and communication is very troubling and the loss in business would be harmful at any time of year, but particularly during the crucial weeks and days leading up to holiday shipping deadlines - especially when Etsy has poured so much money and resources into positioning themselves as the go-to site for unique and wonderful gifts for the season.

That's certainly not the way to "keep commerce human."

I appreciate Liz Morton bringing attention to this issue, as I am facing the same frustrating experience. My Etsy shop, Eco925, was suddenly forced into Holiday Mode on January 30, 2025, without warning or explanation. I have submitted all required documents and reached out multiple times to Etsy Support, but after 14 days, I am still locked out, with no response or resolution.

Like Liz, I am also losing income and customers due to this unjustified restriction. To make matters worse, I am being charged for my Pattern website subscription while being denied access to the service—which feels like an unfair business practice.

It’s alarming to see multiple sellers experiencing the same issue, especially during critical sales periods. Etsy claims to support small businesses, but this lack of transparency and accountability is devastating for independent sellers like us.

If Etsy is monitoring this thread, my Help Request ID is #18902223. I need immediate assistance to resolve this matter, and I encourage other sellers in similar situations to speak out.

Our shop was put on vacation mode yesterday and have finished the verification of ID...we are a bit frantic..this is our sole income as a tiny family business. We had no idea this was coming and received no heads-up from Etsy that it was going to take place. We could have been prepared for this. Etsy needs to figure out how they take better care of the ones that are helping them make its sales. SO very frustrating!

Our Etsy shop also forcefully put on vacation mode without any warning for verification of personal identity. After selling 5 years successfully in Etsy we found that Etsy is not a trustable place to do business. Because we cannot do business solely depend on Etsy. Etsy can within one click forcefully shutdown your business. To survive and grow we need to build alternative way to sell our products other than Etsy. So that we can bring sustainability to our business and life. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Yes! They’ve just done exactly the above to me. A star seller of 16 years, been on ETSY and had all my legal documents verified all those years and now suddenly with zero warning, they forced my shop into vacation mode. Absolutely appalling.

Same thing happened to us. No response and any communication to them is being treated as a nuisance. I also had a thread shut down. Not even 65 seconds after it was posted in the Forum!

At least they deposited funds in my account today. They were previously on hold, but my account still remains on hold (been inactive for an entire week). Worst customer service I have seen (no chat or phone service, and they do not respond to emails).

Same thing happened to me on 12/11. I am still not up. Been a star seller for 1.5 years.

The one who sees
But it's not really clear what it's all about, because there's also a check on the verification of bank accounts, which are functional, but Etsy is asking for re-verification (from an Etsy seller source). The biggest mistake is that Etsy decided to take drastic steps, but it was enough for all sellers to be informed about it and it still didn't accept the tax identification number that sellers have had in their profile for years, some were already so confused that they called their tax office to see if their number was still valid, because suddenly it wasn't accepted on Etsy.

If GPSR is a factor, that's problematic. Etsy currently has no way to differentiate NI from the UK. Selling to NI requires meeting GPSR requirements whereas UK does not. Even UK sellers cannot be compliant with GPSR since they have no way to exclude NI.

Also, GPSR excludes existing inventory up to Dec 13, 2024, the date in went into effect.

But for this discussion, using GPSR as a reason to check compliance makes no sense since Etsy itself is not compliant. Nor is any information required about GPSR requirements, particularly having a representative in the countries that the seller is selling to.

I left Bonanza after the shipping fee was introduced. By that point, sales on the site, which were (for me) never many, had shriveled to almost nothing (again, for me). I would love to see a P&L statement for Bonanza.

Bonanza (or bMarketplace, or whatever they want to call themselves this week) is FINISHED.

They just "killed the golden goose". I imported my 1500+ eBay items to there since it was free. Turned out just to be a lot of work for (maybe) 3 sales a month.

The total fees were higher there before this new $20 a month cost structure, even though they claimed otherwise. When one factors in the 3.49% + 49 cent PayPal processing fees so one can get paid, there went a good chunk of profit.

Now they have boosted their commission to 11%, and still claim that the cost to sell there is less than eBay's. And remember that this does not include payment processing. WHY?? Makes no sense at all.

On eBay, for $27.95 a month, I sell over 100 items there every 30-31 days. Makes ZERO SENSE to pay a site $20 to make just a couple of sales. Since they now allow 50 "free listings", I have trimmed my offerings back to just below that amount. Also had to raise all my prices accordingly to absorb the extra selling costs.

The people who run the show here obviously didn't realize that eBay sellers who imported their listings gave the site a great depth of product, which would attract more buyers. Now that will be gone, because NO ONE will pay them $20 monthly for little to no sales.

The site also has technical issues that they refuse to fix. It was a decent resource to enable the occasional sale, but they will soon be stacked onto the eCommerce trash heap of companies that THOUGHT they could compete with Amazon and eBay. Etsy may also suffer the same fate soon, as many sellers are also leaving their site due to high fees, website issues, and poor management.

Basic eComm rule here: When you do not carry any inventory, and sellers are solely responsible for supplying your site with the goods offered, DON'T BITE THE HAND WHICH FEEDS YOU!!!
