Mercari US Suffers Outage, Problems With Automated Ratings Delay Payments

Mercari US was completely down for several hours this morning with many users questioning whether it was really a scheduled outage for maintenance, as the error message claimed, or a sign of bigger technical problems across the site, including an automated rating issue that delayed payment for some orders.

Users trying to access the site or app during the outage were shown a generic "down for maintenance" message, indicating the issue was due to scheduled system updates.

However, as users flooded Reddit looking for more information, many were skeptical of the message, wondering why they would initially scheduled maintenance for a normally busy time on Monday morning.

It wasn’t scheduled, they are probably scrambling trying to fix it and don’t know how so they are claiming this was scheduled. We need to call this company out on their BS especially if we’re going to allow them to handle our money.

The message that was shown on the Mercari Status Page also told a different story, with no mention of this being routine scheduled maintenance - if it had been, why would they have needed to investigate the cause?

Other users speculated the outage may have been related to other technical issues being reported over the weekend - most importantly a problem with the Automatic Rating functionality that has been causing delays in payments being released to sellers for items shipped last week.

Auto rate feature not working

Has anyone else been experiencing this where it says mercari couldn't complete the transaction after 3 days it says contact the buyer which if they haven't rated in 3 days they aren't rating plus I'm not messing buyers asking for ratings.

So now every order that the buyer doesn't rate I have to reach out to Mercari to get the payment released. This is BS it's ridiculous enough we have to wait 3 days and now it's not even working properly

Ya I have over $300 of merchandise that was delivered Tuesday that I haven't been paid for yet. This is ridiculous and more reason why they should do away with the rating system. No one really reads ratings anyway.

I'm not going to keep sending out stuff if this continues. It happened on 1 order Wed and I didn't think much of it but now it's happening on every order where a buyer doesn't rate such for me is half of my orders.

The Mercari Status Page acknowledged the incident, saying it was resolved on September 15th at 6:52 PM Pacific Time with orders missing auto-ratings receiving them over the "next 24 hours."

It's certainly possible that implementing the "fix" for these missing auto-ratings could have required taking the entire site offline for "maintenance" but it's also possible they may have run into unforeseen complications that caused the temporary outage.

Sellers say they've noticed an increase in technical issues lately, with some blaming the recent introduction of items from Japan flooding the site and others questioning whether the company can hold things together after laying off ~45% of US staff in June - including software engineers.
