Poshmark Launches Smart List AI Image-Based Listing Experience For Sellers
After a year of beta testing, Poshmark is rolling out Smart List AI-powered features to enhance and streamline selling experience on the site.
Poshmark first announced image-based AI powered listing was "coming soon" during PoshFest 2023 but the testing phase apparently took longer than originally planned - finally being released at PoshFest 2024.
Now that Smart List AI is available in the Poshmark app, I took it for a spin to see how it compares to similar tools on other marketplaces.
Here's what Poshmark says about how to use Smart List AI:
- From the app, tap the Smart List AI button in the Sell tab.
- Snap a picture of the front of your item or upload up to 16 images from your camera roll. You can take additional photos of the item including back, tag, and details to give Smart List AI more details, or continue by tapping Done.
- Smart List AI will determine the category or ask for you to add it in. Once the category is determined, Smart List will generate the listing details for you based on your photos.
- Complete your listing by adding any details that Smart List AI couldn’t capture. Tap Generate Title & Description to refresh your listing title and description with the latest updates. If you want to undo changes, simply tap the back arrow.
- To add more photos, tap the camera icon in the bottom right of the listing photo.
- After tapping Next, take a moment to review your listing details, make adjustments, and add any discounted shipping options.
- Once you’re happy with your listing, you’re all set to publish!
Poshmark also provides tips on how to get the best results by using natural lighting, a clean uncluttered background, taking pictures from multiples angles, and filling in additional details if needed.
They say Smart List AI works by analyzing the photos of your item and extracting relevant details such as item type, brand, size, and color, then uses this information to generate a full listing.
Poshmark acknowledges there may be instances where the item’s details are not accurately identified due to various factors such as image quality, lighting, or the complexity of the item itself, saying if you notice that Smart List AI has generated incorrect information, you have the ability to edit the listing details manually before publishing.
As with any AI tools provided by marketplaces, sellers are still ultimately responsible for the accuracy of their listings, so all details should be carefully reviewed before listing.
For my first attempt, I took a picture of a pair of Vans shoes.
While Smart List AI was able to identify they were shoes, it did not know whether they were men's or women's, requiring me to select the category manually.
Surprisingly, it was also not able to identify the size, despite providing a clear image of the tag showing that information - this step was after selecting the Women Shoes category, so at that point it should have been able to use image recognition to extract the correct women's size.
However, it did correctly identify the brand (not hard with the logo on the insoles), the material, and the colors.
The initial AI generated description was short and sweet, but reloading the screen generated another version with a little more "fluff" added.
Next, I tried using it on a shirt that I thought might be more difficult since it doesn't have a specific brand.
Smart AI correctly identified the color and style and provided a decent basic description as well.
For the last test, I tried to throw Poshmark a curveball with a hand crafted, one of a kind purse I had custom made to order from a local leathersmith many years ago.
I was pleasantly impressed when Smart List AI identified not only the colors and material, but also the unique sailing ship design stamped into the leather
Poshmark isn't the only ecommerce company working on "just take a picture and let AI do the rest" listing.
eBay has also been promising a "Magic Lister" that will theoretically do the same thing for over a year, though it is still in internal employee beta testing and has not been released to the public yet.
While we wait for eBay to finally release Magic Listing into the wild, they have at least managed to roll out an AI-powered bulk listing tool for trading cards.
Mercari also launched a beta test of their image based AI listing tool last year, with mixed results and performance.
And Etsy-owned Depop is working on their own AI listing tool to speed up consumer to consumer fashion sales on their platform as well.
