Longtime mega-seller Rick Probstein is launching BYD, a live selling platform aimed directly at competing with eBay Live, Whatnot, Fanatics Collect and more as future on eBay remains up in the air.

Probstein announced the new venture in an interview with Sports Card Madness on YouTube, saying he has been in a year to year relationship with eBay for over 20 years which will continue at least through 2025 - but he will also be launching his own live selling platform in the next few months.

So this is the first time that I'm stating this publicly...I've been in a year-to-year relationship with eBay for over 20 years...and it's been great I have no regrets, you know I have a great relationship with them.

I've met with pretty much all the Senior Management I talked to them on a weekly basis. We have a very very close relationship, so a lot of variables led to this but basically what's happening for 2025 is, and eBay is totally aware of all this, this is not breaking news to eBay they know all this...

...so for 2025 I still have a rates deal with them I still will be selling like a madman you know doing over $100 million hopefully like we normally do on the eBay platform but at the same time we will be launching our own live Commerce Marketplace off of eBay.

...13 months ago I hired a CTO and we hired a development firm and we have been building out a live Commerce auction site platform that has a lot of features.

I've done for eBay a little over 300 live shows and I feel like I have a little bit of a sense of the product. I also could do a deep dive in terms of what does Whatnot do well, what could they do better - Fanatics, eBay all these type of things, from a technology perspective, from a business perspective from an entertainment perspective, and I feel that we will be building a better mouse trap than them.

We're probably two months away from finishing the site and we'll probably hope to launch in about three months...the name that it's going to be known by is BYD.

When asked if there was any point where he approached eBay about partnering to build BYD, Probstein he's had dozen and dozens of meetings with eBay and there "still might come a point where [he] might do something with eBay and roll it back into the eBay site" - though he didn't give any insight or details as to whether that was something eBay had expressed any interest in at this point.

He went on to describe how BYD will work, with sellers being able to sell directly on the platform or consign with Probstein, and the market differentiation he hopes to bring to the table with simplified logistics and shipping capabilities.

BYD will initially focus on Collectibles, but Probstein says the plan is to expand to eventually cover handbags, electronics and other categories which have proven popular amongst live shopping consumers.

While there was no further comment on the future of Probstein Auctions on eBay, it will not be surprising if their year-to-year deal ends or at least significantly changes after 2025.

If he does end up leaving the platform after 20 years and over 5 Million items sold, it would be yet another major loss for eBay after PWCC was removed from the site (ostensibly over shill bidding accusations) and acquired by Fanatics and Burbank Sportscards took millions of cards off of eBay after signing an exclusive deal with Fanatics Collect last year.

eBay Loses Major Trading Card Seller To Fanatics Collect As Hobby Competition Heats Up
Competition is heating up in sports trading cards as mega-seller defects from eBay to Fanatics & Walmart recruits new collectibles sellers.

Probstein is a somewhat controversial figure in the hobby himself, with many accusations of shill bidding lobbed against him as well.

The topic was brought up in an earlier part of that interview, with Probstein largely dismissing the issue by saying they always take action if they are aware shill bidding is happening while putting the responsibility for detecting shill bidding on eBay before shifting the conversation to the problems posed by non-paying bidders on the platform.

That answer seemed to be enough for the hosts of the show, but may not smooth over concerns of hobby enthusiasts whose opinions and experiences about how Probstein operates on eBay will undoubtedly impact whether they will trust and use BYD.

Either way, this development can't be good news for eBay as they face increasing pressure to grow live selling GMV in extremely competitive market where Whatnot, Fanatics, and others have outpaced eBay's lagging efforts.

eBay Pursues Aggressive GMV Targets As Live Collectibles Selling Competition Heats Up
2+ years after launching, eBay Live is finally getting serious about ramping up livestream selling GMV as Collectibles competition heats up.

Would Probstein leaving eBay be good or bad for the hobby and will you give BYD a try as a buyer or seller once it launches? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

I think it is a terrible business move. His cost of doing biz 📈and the market is at its pre-covid status, back to normal after an exceptional run. Rick has always said “eyes on on eBay, thats where the money is”. I agree. I wish him well. I will be surprised if this ever takes off. I hope he has a big “IT” budget.

Bonanza (or bMarketplace, or whatever they want to call themselves this week) is FINISHED.

They just "killed the golden goose". I imported my 1500+ eBay items to there since it was free. Turned out just to be a lot of work for (maybe) 3 sales a month.

The total fees were higher there before this new $20 a month cost structure, even though they claimed otherwise. When one factors in the 3.49% + 49 cent PayPal processing fees so one can get paid, there went a good chunk of profit.

Now they have boosted their commission to 11%, and still claim that the cost to sell there is less than eBay's. And remember that this does not include payment processing. WHY?? Makes no sense at all.

On eBay, for $27.95 a month, I sell over 100 items there every 30-31 days. Makes ZERO SENSE to pay a site $20 to make just a couple of sales. Since they now allow 50 "free listings", I have trimmed my offerings back to just below that amount. Also had to raise all my prices accordingly to absorb the extra selling costs.

The people who run the show here obviously didn't realize that eBay sellers who imported their listings gave the site a great depth of product, which would attract more buyers. Now that will be gone, because NO ONE will pay them $20 monthly for little to no sales.

The site also has technical issues that they refuse to fix. It was a decent resource to enable the occasional sale, but they will soon be stacked onto the eCommerce trash heap of companies that THOUGHT they could compete with Amazon and eBay. Etsy may also suffer the same fate soon, as many sellers are also leaving their site due to high fees, website issues, and poor management.

Basic eComm rule here: When you do not carry any inventory, and sellers are solely responsible for supplying your site with the goods offered, DON'T BITE THE HAND WHICH FEEDS YOU!!!

They need to fix a very broken system full of nasty attitudes. The patrons no longer matter.

Was just checking to see if it would post without creating an account but….
eBay seller since 2022
Just started selling about a year and half ago

800 items sold 99.7 feedback

Recently I went away for family things for 30 days set my acct to be away … got back with items not received cases opened

I wasn’t able to revise existing listings post new listings OR refund the buyer from my eBay funds …

The items were caught up in recent wild fires but ended up being delivered late. I had to beg the buyer to let me pay them off of eBay to close the case because it was on hold and I wasn’t able to refund them from my eBay acct etc…. So luckily they obliged and I did … but ever since then my acct must be strikes as high risk because funds have been on hold 3 days after delivery since then indefinitely might I add… I get the run around everytime etc etc FINALLY I got someone saying it’s temporary it’ll be back to normal etc. these r all reps from escalated departments… one lady told me that with my history and feedback I’ve proved beyond doubt that I’m reliable seller and shouldn’t be on hold she put in for a appeal never heard back got the run around for another few months… they keep telling me I’ve been chosen for the new update they r rolling out total BS … do you believe that sellers will stay on eBay with these holds ? No they will simply go to another platform … they r 100% making money on the holds and use any reasoning to tell you basically no and keep profiting…. The get around is creating a new acct… these cases were closed without eBay having to step in and might I add I lost $$ and its been truly frustrating esp since I’ve built the acct up but I know I can do it again.. when they tell me its going to happen to all accts I just mention how my brother just opened one n now has immediate payments they don’t know what to say I don’t think they really even know.,, its sad n scummy but I see a class action lawsuit coming honestly ! I don’t know💬 if I forgot anything but well written thanks for the information. Have a great one!
