Value Added Resource Week In Review 10-27-24
Welcome to the Value Added Resource ecommerce news week in review!
eBay News
eBay is rolling out a new process for reporting listings and content that violate its policies, but users worry bad actors have already figured out easy ways to fool AI enforcement bots, allowing possibly dangerous or illegal items to remain on the platform.
Two and a half years after initially launching eBay Live, the company is finally getting serious about ramping up livestream selling Gross Merchandise Volume as Collectibles competition heats up.
As eBay continues their multi-year journey to "solve" unpaid items on the platform, one point of frustration with immediate payment requirements has been the lack of support for combined shipping if a buyer wins multiple auctions from the same seller.
Now, an unannounced update to the How Bidding Works policy page shows eBay is rolling out a solution - Shop More, Ship Together - that will still require bidders to provide payment details upfront, while providing a delay before payment is processed to allow for additional items to be won and purchased together.
The official announcement of "Shop More, Ship Together" is likely being saved for eBay's last Seller Check-In event of the year, slated for November 14th - and sellers are wondering if any other announcements or even a Fall Seller Update may be coming soon too.
While we've yet to see any holiday focused advertising from eBay, they have released more ad spots in the Things. People. Love campaign highlighting sneakers, handbags, and pre-loved fashion sellers on the site.
Sellers continue to be frustrated with changes being made to the listing form design for creating variations as eBay introduces new image upload process that disrupts workflow during critical Q4 holiday selling season.
eBay has revised their original announcement about peak season shipping costs and is now saying USPS holiday surcharges will apply, effective October 27.
Poshmark News
As predicted last week, Poshmark has announced they are returning to their original fee structure after massive pushback on new fee structure that split fees between buyers and sellers.
Before the reversal was announced, a seller questioned the company's ethics and wondered if the fee debacle was Poshmark's New Coke moment in this week's letter to the editor.
As Poshmark returns to the old fee structure, some sellers may be eligible to receive rebates to help offset the additional time and work needed to adjust pricing on listings, but little corporate attention has been given to buyers who paid fees during the failed 3 week experiment.
Now that some of those buyers are demanding refunds and threatening regulatory reports or class action lawsuits, would Posh credit help restore trust & goodwill?
After a year of beta testing, Poshmark is rolling out Smart List AI-powered features to enhance and streamline selling experience on the site - see how it stacks up against image-based listing tools on other marketplaces!
Etsy / Reverb News
Etsy has spent much of this year positioning themselves as the go to gifting site for all your special occasion needs - now they're pulling out the stops for the holiday shopping rush with in person pop-up shop experience, brick and mortar gift card sales push, seasonal marketing campaigns, extended purchase protection and more!
Ex-Reverb Chief Product Officer Bradford Shellhammer has finally revealed his next gig, taking on the Chief Product Officer role at fashion marketplace Rent The Runway.
Shipping News
USPS is making it easier to dispute Automated Package Verification (APV) postage discrepancy adjustments, launching online form shippers can submit to request overpaid postage refunds.
USPS has filed a request with the Postal Regulatory Commission to add a new product to the market dominant product list based on the experimental product “Connect Local Mail”, effective January 1, 2025.
Online marketplaces warn sellers of possible Canada Post union strike, advising to consider alternate carriers to avoid disruption during crucial Q4 holiday shopping season.
