Value Added Resource Week In Review 5-5-24
Welcome to the Value Added Resource ecommerce news week in review!
eBay News
We kicked off the week with a pre-earnings look at highlights and lowlights from Q1 2024 and what's happening so far in Q2 2024, including leadership changes and corporate news, AI initiatives and new features, Promoted Listings and more!
eBay's Q1 2024 results showed flat GMV and Active Buyers with Promoted Listings ads once again doing the heavy lifting on revenue growth and AI promises distracting from critical core infrastructure failures.
eBay Live livestream shopping has finally come to the desktop browser experience after almost 2 years of in-app exclusivity.
eBay listings are once again missing seller-provided description information as users report descriptions are either completely missing or replaced by a server error message.
The intermittent issue appears to be global with errors reported across multiple countries and while the problem it presents for buyers is obvious, it is also interrupting workflows for sellers who depend on information in the description field to identify the item and location for shipping.
Other Ecommerce News
Etsy CEO Josh Silverman has taken a strong stance in favor of allowing AI-assisted creations to be sold on the site as "handmade", likening the collaboration between humans and machines to other creative and artistic expressions like electronic dance music.
Live selling platform Whatnot continues product updates with new Free Pickup option and enhanced card break experience.
Free Pickup is now available to all sellers globally and once enabled, it will be offered as an option by default for all shows. Sellers can also toggle the feature on/off per livestream by going into the show settings and tapping ‘Free Pickup’ under shipping.
